I’ll give you a brief scenario, and tell me if it’s ever happened to you. You spend weeks and weeks (or months and months) looking for a new job. You ring loads of agencies and even get put forward for a jobs. However you don’t always get interviews and when you chase up some feedback or try to get an interview, the trail seems to go cold – “the vacancy is filled” or “another agency got a successful candidate through” or “sorry, the vacancy is pulled”.
Often these situations can frustrate. After much perseverance you finally get the role you want. Days into your new job, you are at your desk when your mobile rings… “Hi, this is ABC agency, we have a great role that we think you would be great for!” Feeling quite safe in your new role, you say “Umm, not right now, I have found a job. Bye” Click and you end the call. This happens over and over for a while and you wonder to yourself, “how comes all these agencies have all these jobs available when I am in work. I wish they were like that when I was looking.”One mistake that people often make is not to keep in touch with agencies and recruitment consultants once they find work. I believe it’s good practise to keep hold of the names and phone numbers of those recruiters who ring you…even after you have found your new role.
Here are a few reasons:
· It’s likely that the recruiter will have had a look at your CV and shortlisted you from a large number of candidates. This means that you may have been well positioned to get an interview for the job the person is contacting you about.
· By getting the job spec from the recruiter, you can get a feel of the jobs that agencies are putting you forward for.
· When it comes time for you to move on, the same person you want to brush off is the same one you will want to contact when job seeking again. You may not realize but often recruiters use software that records every contact they make with a candidate. You will be in a stronger position in the medium-long term when a recruiter knows that he/she contacted you before.
By keeping in touch and referring to previous contact you had with them, you will gain more legitimacy with the recruiter and come across as a better candidate than someone who may have never spoken to the recruiter before. Therefore the next time you get a call from an agent, ask them to send you the job spec, make a note of their name and get their number. This info will come in very handy one day!
