It’s been a bit of a week for the UK government, there was a particularly awkward Alistair Darling budget presentation plus unemployment figures were published showing that it has soared to its highest level since Labour came to power.
In the 3 months to February the number of people looking for work jumped by 177,000 and broke the 2.1 million mark. In direct relation the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance increased for the 13th month in a row, up by 73,700 bringing the total number of people claiming the allowance to reach 1.46million, the highest since September 1997.
We all know times are tough and these type of announcements are not exactly uplifting however, it’s not all doom and gloom. Yes there are more people out there looking for work meaning it’s a great time for employers to develop their direct attraction strategy and reduce recruitment costs. Not only that however when you actually look at the figures in more depth you’ll see it’s a better time form jobseeker to. Whilst there were 363,500 new claims for jobseeker allowance last month, over 275,000 million came off unemployment benefit, an increase of 22,500 from last month. So that 22,500 more people than the month before getting back to work.
