Personal Branding on Social Networking Sites.

Posted by Joanne Brent on 11 May 2009 | Tagged as: Direct recruitment strategies, Employer Branding, HR Strategy, Social Media

Some businesses use social networking sites to check out potential employees. Jobseekers beware - employers are increasingly checking out networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to get a feel for prospective employees. Fiona Hewitt, director of Brand YOU, says while some are just “checking out drunken photos on Facebook”, savvy employers are using these sites as a recruitment tool to assess people’s public persona and reputation.

And whether you’re job hunting or preparing for a promotion, there’s never been a better time to define your personal brand and boost your professional visibility. In this “incredibly competitive” market in which there’s plenty of uncertainty, Hewitt says you need to stand out through “working out who you are and showcasing your talents to others”.

Interactive & informative! The guys’ n gals at Google have done it again. With billions of people out there worrying about the global employment hick-up, it’s the wiz-kids at Google who have yet again launched another hugely useful service for us.

Although only a trial, whilst also only using the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as the data source, Google has produced and interactive graph where you can quickly view unemployment figures from 1990 – date, and compare trends from US Stats and Counties.

It’s been a bit of a week for the UK government, there was a particularly awkward Alistair Darling budget presentation plus unemployment figures were published showing that it has soared to its highest level since Labour came to power.

In the 3 months to February the number of people looking for work jumped by 177,000 and broke the 2.1 million mark. In direct relation the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance increased for the 13th month in a row, up by 73,700 bringing the total number of people claiming the allowance to reach 1.46million, the highest since September 1997.

Job board scammers and internet fraudsters - beware!

Posted by Joanne Brent on 17 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Employer Branding, Facts & Figures, HR Strategy, Social Media

Online scamming is as abundant as ever - and though some of you may be well versed in dodging such scams as easily as you type or perform searches in google - there is a margin of the public so fresh to browsing online (and as desperate for a lifeline as they are fresh) who are being taken for a ride by criminals lurking on career sites and job boards.

Keeping up with recruitment technology and tools.

Posted by Joanne Brent on 10 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Employer Branding, HR Strategy, Social Media

It has been an amazing year in recruiting and talent management, despite severe economic hardships, budget cuts, and widespread hiring freezes. Unlike the economic turmoil following 9/11 and the dot-com bubble burst, many recruiting functions have continued to innovate and stretch the limits of what can be defined as “standard recruiting.” Rather than withering away to hide in a corner - recruitment continues to be a sector growing in technology and methodologies despite the doomsayers noise over recession angst.
